Basically, you can't achieve an upper rung until you've already got the one below.
Note the bottom rung, physiological, is: food, clothing & shelter. Then comes safety (I'd equate this to having your "shelter" in a safe neighborhood). Then love (a family, a spouse). Then self esteem and confidence. Then you're all good.
This, by the way, is why the only people who go to therapists are middle and upper classes. You can't even work on your self-esteem or marital issues if you aren't already beyond life's other struggles.
